If so, I was wondering if they are beneficial for a C5 quad, I am 2 yrs post injury and have always used a powerchair, a straight manual chair so far has not been very practical for me. My issues are I have are zero triceps, no wrist extension, and no hand/finger function. I have heard about the power-assist manual chairs and they look pretty cool. Any advice would be great.

if you have no use of your hands and finger you would not be able to control the movement of the wheel chair. power wheel chair has controll that you have to use with your hand, unless they have one thats different from the one i was going to order for my sister, she have no use of her hand, and it was hard for us to use the controll for her. but i think they have chairs that can be controlled by the mouth with some kind of devise .

Is it a legal requirement? Does anyone know what kind of insurance they are meant to have?
Thanks

Insurance is not required for those mobility scooter that are meant for elderly and disabled people. The actual item may be covered under a special rider or their homeowners policy but as far as for liability, it is not required where I live.

Any C5 quadriplegics (SCI) who use power assist manual wheelchairs or in OT/PT with any knowledge?

Hi, I am an OT.
Go to this site:
http://www.allegromedical.com/wheelchairs-c540/quickie-xtender-power-assist-p189918.htm-just one of the brands…I am not recommending this particular chair, just an example.
Do you need a power tilt for pressure relief? This doesn't seem to have it.
There are several sources and a variety of chairs.
It would be best to go to a wheelchair assessment and clinic if you live near a good one, where you can be evaluated and you can explain your specific needs and uses.
Everyone has different needs, and can't make a blanket statement as to what best meets yours.
Currently, according to what I've read, power assist is a bit more difficult to get reimbursement from insurance, but if you have a great team, they should be able to get it figured out for you.
You can also google or yahoo search spinal cord injury forums.
I had a great link not to long ago, where people discuss their favorite cushions, chairs, etc. Benefits and so on.
Best thing to do is to get a wheelchair fitting clinic apointment with a team of OT's, PT's, and a seating specialist. The availability for test drives for what you are looking for is better, especially with larger places.
Sometimes it takes forever to get a chair, but the clinics sometimes can speed up the process, and get you something works just right for you.
If you choose to go to a standard outpatient clinic to get fitted, be sure the therapists there do wheelchair fittings as their specialty, or frequently.
They will know the drawbacks and so on of the various chairs.
But, really, I'd look for a chatboard for people with spinal cord injuries, and get their advice. They have lived it. And will give you honest advise and tell you what works and what doesn't.
Then make a list of what you want in a chair, before you get fitted.
Good luck!!

electric wheelchair scooters manual wheelchairs eand so on and so on just some ideas of what i am talking about

coming from 32 years of being disabled myself ( i am in a wheelchair permanently) i would say most people that use a chair, scooter etc. probably needs it but i have saw some people who were trying to trick their insurance company.

are mobility scooters (preferably the pride icon mobility scooter) vatable in the uk?

I believe that anything needed by a person in the UK that is registered disabled does not have to pay VAT this also covers special chairs ect. Even if that person needs a shower fitted then it is VAT free as well as any building work required. The supplier should have the necessary paperwork for this.

I have been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and in need of a ramp to get in and out of the house. I have a power wheel chair, but am stuck in the house because I do not have a ramp and it is so heavy it cannot be carried up and down the steps by anyone. I cannot afford to have one built because i have thousands of dollars of medical bills already. Is there anyone out there that can help? I live in Delaware co. Thanks!

Have a look at this article about wheelchair ramps. There are lots of organization that will help you. For example, try Rebuilding Together. You will find information on that page:

I'm a disabled guy & plan to make some modifications to my power-wheelchair. Is there anyone who knows how to fit in a motorcycle engine or any kind of suitable engines into a power-wheelchair? I need to replace my battery as it keeps giving me problems which is quite unconvenient especially when I'm on the road.. & it's really really slow(slower than an average human walking speed).
Anyone with informations regarding the modifications will be a great help to me.
Thx in advance. =)

They generally make motorized wheelchairs fairly weak on power so that you don't accidentally flip them over or run people down with them.

Plus you won't be able to use it indoors if you put a gasoline motor on it.

If you are just going to use it outside – your best bet would be to get the motor (and possibly some other drive train components) from a ride-on lawnmower (or just buy a ride-on lawnmower, and take the blades, etc. off of it).

Rigging it up is either a skill you have, or don't have – I can make just about anything work – but I would have to actually see the chair you have in order to point you in the right direction.

This is needed to get safety on the streets for handicaps that ride scooters and electric wheelchairs. I know some provinces are starting to license. If your province or town is doing so please let me know asap.

I've looked every where on the Internet but if you phone your local traffic and licensing office they should all of that information for you to obtain best of luck with your search

Good Luck
